“Witches
and other women”

Welcome to MIDA's sixth edition of Rose's Choice - an exhibition
housed in Scontrone, Italy, dedicated to the exploration of
female artists and their steady contribution to the world of
art. Through paintings, sculptures and photography, women from
all around the globe have contributed to the exhibition offering
many forms of expression on both personal and social levels.
The passion and the desire we show dedicating our view of art to
the world of Woman who masterly expresses herself in this area,
leads us to consider a different view of reality which is
altered by the dual mechanism of modernization and change.
These site specific projects, devoted to the image of Woman in
art with a theme which tempts them to reflect upon themselves,
WITCHES AND OTHER WOMEN consist of a collection of contemporary
views which describe a world charged with disconnects and rights
to claim their place in the world. The functional creative
request is perceived especially in its effects of structural
surface, of creation in comparison with the environment and the
person to whom it speaks. Combined, this makes the work fluid.
It is a seductive project which marks the commingling of
languages in a global view which continues to join the inside
and the outside, the town centre and the area of the museum,
with a relationship between senders and receivers.
In this case the Village changes into an extraordinary vehicle
for a period of total art, a journey rich with suggestions. Art
invades the atmosphere and all senses start to work. You can
observe, feel, smell, touch, and it is impossible to stay
indifferent. Also, because it is more than a simple view and
admiration of desire, it is a different view of artistic
horizons.
The proposition is an agreement to wander in order to explore
the different Artists and the experiments which occur between
artistic practice and social relationships. It is art as a form
of pedagogy, which can involve the visitor in a great cultural
event, where the structure of the exposition is linked to the
time of the events that have followed each other and that unwind
following definite themes.

A project in continuous evolution, this exhibition is dynamic in
the space and environment of our village and within the
historical context where we are living. This year we have
widened our spaces by suggesting to our sculptresses to work
outdoors. By modelling their works and inserting them in our
urban context, they will transform the image of our spaces and
places with their deepest ability of expression. It is a great
responsibility to entrust them with our city centre, that is so
precious to us, and it is at the same time a great
responsibility for them to work in our context, expressing their
inner being and leaving a sign, a message which must be masterly
inserted into our habitat. Additionally, the theme chosen this
year is intriguing: WITCHES AND OTHER WOMEN. Sometimes goddess,
sometimes fairy, mother, wife, lover, she uses her mind and
imagination, she consults the stars and shapes the earth, she
sways on the wings of desire and dream. In the course of
history, Woman was considered from absolute pureness, beautiful
and virgin relative to the source of sin and deception,
relegated to the moors and the forests. But, definitely it is
this complexity of being all these things in the same time which
intrigues us and makes her more charming.
I would like to say thank you, as always, to the imagination,
the enthusiasm and passion of the artistic director Lino
Alviani, who makes us grow and stand out every year.
Thank you to the artists that also in this occasion have taken
part in this “game” and we hope we will have managed to gain a
bit of their affection. A particular thanks to the President of
the Province, Stefania Pezzopane, and to Pasqualino Del Cimmuto
of the Comunità Montana for their emotional involvement, in
addittion to their political and economical support. This gives
us strength and determination to continue forward.
In conclusion, as the realization of this project represents a
remarkable effort for our municipality, I would like to say
thank you and give an affectionate hug to all the
administrators, the employees of the local council and the
volunteers who have contributed to the project.

Much to my satisfaction I am here for the sixth exhibition of
contemporary art, “Rose’s Choice”, being both a l’altra metà del
genere umano, da sempre represso ewoman and administrator of a
place that is enriched by silenzioso o celato dietro falsi nomi,
e proprio per questo espresso oggi con convinta forza emotiva e
ricco di significati anche sociali. Non so se esiste una
creatività diThe project challenges the geographical-economical
genere, ma certamente un particolare sentire a cui vaflows of
art, attracting a public to an unusual place, which becomes an
evocative temple and keeper of art. Additionally, thanks must
also be given to MIDA for their efforts in this project. A
village of 200 inhabitants which has a property of 100 works of
art is already cutting edge and this unique experience places
Scontrone in the vanguard for the understanding and promotion of
culture. At last, Woman escapes from the state of Muse, in which
the history of art has relegated her for centuries. She becomes
artist, giving a new look, that of the other half of human
gender, in the past repressed and silent or hidden behind false
names. For this reason she is now expressed with emotional power
and rich of meanings. I don’t know if a creativity of gender
exists, but of course there is a particular ability of feeling
that must be allowed within art circles. “Rose’s Choice” is
already at the international level, with its incomplete half of
the history of art and its original aspirations. I wish this
happy and bright experience will influence the initiative and
imagination of other small communities and that it will put
those small communities on the map of places of culture as well.

The sixth exhibition of contemporary art, “Rose’s Choice”, in
2007 is the bearer of two titles of absolute pride and
excellence in the institutional epigraph: it is international
and interdisciplinary towards Woman.
This makes the village of Scontrone a privileged place to reach
those purposes that elsewhere are only desired and that are not
easily achievable.
This beautiful and enduring challenge is in progress. The
challenge of the organizers is also linked to the refined and
elevated continuity of the initiative. This includes the will to
focus the “event” and make it valuable and rich in motivation
and identification in addition to the interaction between the
creative of Art and the pragmatic that Art offers to a wider and
probably more demanding public. This happens in an integration
between creation and stage arrangement of the object, which
includes not only physical arrangement, but also the
relationship with the cultures and the social tissue of the
village.
The subtitle of the exhibition sounds like “Witches and other
women”.
As I recall from my studies, it makes me think about one of the
considerations of the anthropologist J.C. Muller: this scholar
believed that the kuwu (i.e. the witchcraft) between the Rukuba
of Nigeria was very far from a distraction moment, rather “…able
to refer to a social world which is very far from subverting, on
the contrary it grows its system of social compulsions ”, adding
that “... it indicates the manifestations of a mystical strength
that can be directed towards the good of the community, ... the
regime of the accusations results widely functional to the
social order...”
In short he was meaning that these “witches” were able to
provide a really positive message or, if you prefer, an
absolutely calming one. Therefore, praise should be given to the
civic Administration of Scontrone, in the person of the mayor
Patrizia Melone. Additionally, accolades should be given to the
tireless artistic director Lino Alviani and an affectionate
thought to all the inhabitants of this delightful village from
the Comunità Montana, which offers its patronage and wishes the
best for this initiative.
